Our focus
How might we create an AI feature for Spotify, that promotes positive relations with others?

The proces
The process began with thorough research and interviews to identify user needs, which informed the creation of detailed personas. We then moved on to low-fidelity prototyping, followed by think-aloud user testing to gather feedback. Based on the insights gained, we refined and improved the prototypes multiple times, ensuring a continuous evolution of the design. This iterative approach led to several improvements that ultimately resulted in a high-fidelity prototype in Figma.

The idea behind our solution is to bring people together through a music quiz and to hereby create positive relations with others. The application takes advantage of users’ already defined Spotify taste profile, as well as Spotify’s suggestion AI, to automatically generate a quiz that is fair and fun for every player involved. The AI would accommodate players who do not listen to a lot of music compared to other players. The quiz would also include questions where they would have a natural advantage despite knowing about fewer songs than the other players.

Every game is hosted by a single user. This is referred to as the host, which is the player that can adjust the quiz, but also serves as the device which the music for the quiz is going to be played from. This means that if the quiz is going to be played through a speaker, the host would be the one that is connected to the speaker. Every other player joins the quiz that the host set up and once everyone has joined, Spotify will generate different teams of the current players. This includes both the host, and every joined player, as the quiz is purely generated by AI, and thus the host can play along as well.

Besides the standard “Who made this song” questions, the host can adjust the quiz, and make it more personal. This can be done through the setting About Participants, which includes fun facts and personal questions about the participants' music tastes throughout the quiz, see the examples in the picture below. Such a question might be, “Who among you has listened the most to 'Single Ladies' in 2024?”. As every player’s music data is already stored within Spotify, this enables AI to find interesting connections between the player's music tastes.
